About 150,000 people die each year in the US from strokes due to high blood pressure, and many more non-fatal strokes that leave them disabled.

Antihypertensive drugs are commonly used, but these have undesirable side effects. Weight control is the single most important factor in the prevention of hypertension, and weight reduction in hypertensive overweight individuals offers the most effective-non drug means of lowering blood pressure. Other important modalities include elimination of alcohol and sodium restriction. The average American typically consumes about 6-8 times the amount of sodium needed per day. Using processed food significantly increases your daily sodium intake.
Lower High Blood Pressure Naturally - Exercise
Regular exercise helps lower blood pressure. It is important for effective stress management, another risk factor for high blood pressure. Blood pressure in hypertensives is normally lowered 3 - 6 mm Hg by an increased calcium intake. In the Nurses’ Health Study there was a 23% reduction in risk of high blood pressure associated with regular calcium intake of at least 800 mg/day compared to an intake below 400 mg/day. Cheese, wine and chocolate should be avoided by sensitive individuals and those using mood elevators, since these foods can raise blood pressure.
Lower High Blood Pressure Naturally - Vegetarian Diet
In the Adventist Health Study, non-vegetarians had a risk of fatal stroke that was 20 - 30% higher than the vegetarians. The lower blood pressure levels seen in vegetarians may result in part from the fact that vegetarians are leaner. In addition, vegetarian diets are low in saturated fat and rich in fruits and vegetables, excellent sources of potassium and magnesium that lower blood pressure. During an intensive 2-week live-in program, a low fat, high fiber vegan diet, combined with moderate exercise and stress management, lowered blood pressure 5 - 7% in middle aged men and women.
A diet providing substantial levels of potassium and calcium, and with reduced saturated and total fat, has an antihypertensive effect, in both normotensives and hypertensives, comparable to that achieved with many pharmacological interventions. After 3 weeks, a diet containing 10 servings per day of fruits and vegetables and 2 - 3 servings per day of low-fat dairy products lowered systolic and diastolic blood pressure by 5.5 mm and 3.0 mm Hg, respectively. Much greater reductions were seen in the hypertensive subgroup.

Gout is an extremely painful form of arthritis—so painful that most patients can’t even bear the weight of a bedsheet on the tender joint. Gout’s throbbing pain often hits at night, turning the skin red-hot and leaving the affected joint swollen and tender for 5 to 10 days.
Gout is actually a fairly common disorder, affecting more than 2 million Americans who happen to have excessive levels of uric acid, a waste product from body tissues. We all have uric acid in our blood, which carries it to the kidneys to be excreted in urine. But if you experience gout, either you produce too much uric acid or you produce a normal amount but don’t excrete enough, says Branton Lachman, Pharm.D. Either way, the excess turns into tiny crystals that collect in joints, causing intense inflammation and pain.
Often the big toe is the prime target, but almost any joint can become a sore point. While any adult can fall prey to gout, the typical victim is a middle-aged male, who may be overweight and have a family history of the disease. If you’re a current—or potential—sufferer, heed these dos and don’ts.
When to Call a Doctor:
If you experience sudden and intense pain in a joint, call your doctor. Even if the pain goes away in a day or two, it is important to see your doctor, because gout left untreated can only lead to more pain and joint damage.
Your doctor can prescribe a number of prescription medications to help reduce inflammation and relieve pain during a gout attack, including corticosteroids such as prednisone
Once an attack has passed, your doctor may prescribe a medication to lower your uric acid in an attempt to prevent future attacks. You also may receive colchicine, an anti-gout medicine used for thousands of years, now sold under the names allopurinol and probenecid.

Cherries have long been a folk remedy for gout. Although there is no hard scientific evidence that cherries help relieve gout, many people find them beneficial. “Foods that are high in a substance called purine contribute to higher levels of uric acid,” says Robert Wortmann, M.D. Avoiding such foods is prudent.
Those foods most likely to induce gout contain anywhere from 150 to 1,000 milligrams of purine in each 3 ;1/2-ounce serving. They include high-protein animal products such as anchovies, brains, consommé, gravy, heart, herring, kidney, liver, meat extracts, meat-containing mincemeat, mussels, sardines, and sweetbreads.
Gout Home Remedies - Limit other purine-containing foods
Foods that may contribute to gout have a moderate amount of purines (from 50 to 150 milligrams in 3 1/2 ounces). Limiting them to one serving daily is necessary for those with severe cases. These foods include asparagus, dry beans, cauliflower, lentils, mushrooms, oatmeal, dry peas, shellfish, spinach, whole grain cereals, whole grain breads, and yeast.
In the same category are fish, meat, and poultry. Limit them to one 5- to 6-ounce serving 5 a day.

Avoid alcohol if you have a history of gout, says Gary Stoehr, Pharm.D. Alcohol seems to increase uric acid production and inhibit its secretion, which can lead to gout attacks in some people. Beer may be particularly undesirable because it has a higher purine content than wine and other spirits, says Dr. Blaurock-Busch.
If you do tipple on special occasions, minimize your risk of a reaction by drinking slowly and buffering wine with readily absorbed carbohydrates such as crackers and fruit, suggests Felix O. Kolb, M.D.

If you have high blood pressure in addition to gout, you have double trouble. That’s because certain drugs prescribed to lower blood pressure, such as diuretics, actually raise uric acid levels, says Dr. Lachman. So taking steps to lower your blood pressure naturally is wise. Try decreasing your sodium intake, losing excess weight, and exercising. But never discontinue any prescribed medication without consulting your doctor.
Gout Home Remedies - Apply charcoal
Charcoal draws toxins from the body, notes Dr. Thrash. She recommends mixing 1/2 cup of powdered activated charcoal with a few tablespoons flaxseed (ground to a meal in a blender) and enough very warm water to make a paste. Apply to the affected joint. Cover with a cloth or plastic to hold in place. Change every 4 hours or leave on overnight.

If you prefer a warm soak instead of a compress, use the same recipe (without the flaxseeds) and then gradually add enough hot water until you can comfortably submerge your foot in the mixture. Soak for 30 to 60 minutes. Just be careful to use an old basin and not to get any charcoal on clothes or bed linens because it stains.
Taken by mouth, activated charcoal can help reduce uric acid levels in the blood, says Dr. Thrash. Take 1/2 to 1 teaspoon four times a day at the following times: upon rising, at midmorning, at midafternoon, and at bedtime.

- Eat a few cloves of garlic each day. “The stinking rose,” as it’s sometimes called, has been used for several millennia to combat everything from colds to intestinal infections. Its antifungal action makes it useful against yeast infections. It’s most effective if crushed and eaten raw. If you don’t relish the idea of eating a whole clove, chop it up and sprinkle it on salads, or stir it into pasta sauce.
Battle Yeast Infection with Natural Cures Using Yogurt
- Every day, eat a cup of plain, unsweetened yogurt that contains live Lactobacillus acidophilus bacteria. L. acidophilus has been shown to cut down on yeast overgrowth in the vagina and the intestines. Note that if what you have is a bacterial infection and not yeast infection, yogurt will actually make matters worse.
- Buy capsules or tablets of Lactobacillus acidophilus. Look for a supplement that contains 1 to 2 billion live organisms per pill. You can either take two pills daily. (To help prevent infection, many women use single dose of acidophilus every month on the last day of their menstrual period.
Natural Cures Yeast Infection - Avoid the following:
- When you have an infection, cut way back on sugary foods and starches. Avoid white bread, pasta, honey, molasses, and fruit juices. These foods raise the level of blood sugar (glucose) in your body, and yeast feed on glucose.
- Avoid alcohol. Yeast digests alcohol, too — and you don’t want well-fed yeast if you’re trying to end an infection.
Other Tips for Natural Cures - Yeast Infection
- Go without underwear at night. Since yeast flourishes in warm, moist environments, the ventilation will help you avoid infections. When you do wear underwear, go with cotton or with cotton-lined panties. They allow for better air circulation than synthetic fibers.
- For the same reason leave tight pants in the closet.
- Don’t linger in a wet bathing suit after swimming, shower promptly and change into dry clothes.
- Don’t use soap or very hot water to cleanse the vaginal tissues. If you do, you’ll remove healthy natural skin barriers that help to control yeast.
- Refrain from using scented tampons, feminine deodorants, and douches. The chemical used to create pleasant fragrances can upset the delicate environment in the vagina and allow yeast to take over.
- Also avoid perfumed dusting powders. Some women develop an irritation when using these powders — and the additional irritation makes them more prone to yeast infection.
- Refrain from dusting your vaginal area with any product that contains cornstarch. Though cornstarch acts as a drying agent, yeast feed on it.
- Make a point of urinating after intercourse. Mucous membranes of the vagina normally are slightly acidic, but semen is alkaline, making it friendlier to yeast. Urinating will help make the area less inviting to infectious growth.
- Couples can past a yeast infection back and forth during sex. If you have a vaginal yeast infection, be sure your partner isn’t also infected, which most often happens in uncircumcised men. The most likely sign of a yeast infection in males is inflammation on the head of the penis.

Reconsiderations: Yeast Infection
If you’re a woman who has been previously treated for vaginal yeast infections, you’re probably familiar with the symptoms, and can treat them on your own. Otherwise, always see a doctor to rule out other problems, such as sexually transmitted disease.
You should also get medical care if you have a discharge that’s bloody or very foul-smelling, feel pain during urination or intercourse, or have symptoms that don’t go away after you’ve been treating them for 5 days. And if you’ve been taking antibiotics for another infection, talk to your doctor about an alternative treatment, since use of antibiotics is often associated with yeast infections.

Top 10 Gout Myths on Natural Gout Remedies, Cures and Treatments:
I am always taken aback at the number and persistence of gout myths. Just read a few Internet web pages on gout and gout treatments and it won’t take you long to find contradicting information – even from supposedly reputable sites. These myths are one of the key reasons why the quality of gout care for gout has fallen so much over the past few decades. Bad information keeps getting passed on – over and over. This article will help you understand some of these myths and learn the truth.
Myth #1: Gout is curable
There are tons of websites out there that promise “gout cures” if only you send them some amount of money. The truth is, that for 90% of cases, gout is a genetic condition. This is why gout often runs in families. Genetic conditions cannot be cured, only managed. The other 10 % of cases are called secondary gout. These are usually caused by some underlying medical condition. Some of these conditions can be very serious such as lymphoma or kidney disease. Only a small number of cases are truly ‘curable’. These cases are usually caused by high blood pressure medications called diuretics or extreme obesity. If you have gout, your doctor should check for a secondary cause of gout, if none is found, then you have a genetic condition that can only be managed.
Myth #2: “Natural” or “Herbal” treatments are better than all those scary gout drugs
Colchicine, a drug commonly used to treat gout is made from the bulb of the autumn crocus flower (scientific name: Colchicum autumnale) and is a “natural” treatment that has been used for over 2000 years. Despite this, Colchicine is a highly toxic substance that causes nausea, vomiting and/or diarrhea in 100% of people that take it at a high dose. Fact is, that more than half of the modern pharmacopeia are “natural” substances but may not be healthy to take, however, they do have the benefit of having their safety and use closely monitored by the FDA. Natural treatments can also make things worse if you are not careful. For example, vitamin C has been shown to lower uric acid levels and reduce gout attacks but they can also increase the risk of kidney stones and if you start then suddenly, it can actually cause more attacks. The truth is that many of the prescription drugs used to treat gout can be dangerous, but if taken properly, they can be very safe and are highly effective. Most gout attacks can be stopped in minutes or hours, not days or weeks. And if you properly manage gout’s underlying cause, hyperuricemia, there is no need to suffer from gout attacksat all.
Myth #3: Gout medications will make your attacks stop right away
Actually, uric acid lowering medications can increase gout attacks in the short run but eventually, over the course of 6-12 months, they will usually stops them completely. Most people experience more attacks when they first start taking these medications, then stop taking them, figuring that they are not working. This is because we know that sudden changes in uric acid levels, even drops in uric acid levels, can trigger attacks. Most doctors do not prescribe uric acid lowering medications at the right doses and do not also prescribe prophylaxis medications to prevent these attacks. If you are starting to take uric acid lowering medications, make sure you are starting at a very low dose and increase slowly over a period of several weeks to full strength – never start or stop them suddenly. Also make sure your doctor has given you medications to prevent attacks during the first 6-12 months of treatment.
Myth #4: If you stay way from seafood and beer your gout will go away
Of all the gout myths, myths about diet are the most presistant. But like all good myths, there is some truth it. Seafood and beer have both been shown to be powerful foods to cause a sudden increase in uric acid, which can trigger an attack but in most cases staying away from these foods or eating a strict “low purine diet” will only reduce the number of attacks you have, not eliminate them completely. 90% of gout cases are genetic and diet cannot overpower genetics.
Myth #5: If you have gout, you should stay away from all alcohol
Again, like with all good myths, there is some truth here. Beer has been shown to be very bad for gout. People with gout should not drink beer at all – this advice doesn’t make me very popular, but it is true. Spirits such as vodka and whiskey also raise the risk of gout but only about half as much as beer. Wine on the other hand, can slightly decrease your risk of gout if you drink no more than one glass per day. With two glasses, the risk is about the same as for those that do not drink at all. So the key here is if you want a drink, stick to wine and limit yourself to, at most, two glasses.
Myth #6: Other then the pain of gout attacks, gout really doesn’t cause any other problems
This one is dead wrong, and I mean dead. Improperly treated gout can be a crippling disease. Regular gout attacks can damage and even destroy joints, and tophus (large growths of uric acid crystals in the body) can disfigure hands, feet and form in other parts of the body, including the heart (this is where the ‘dead’ comes in). Also, the underlying cause of gout, hyperuricemia, have been shown to be strongly associated with heart disease, high blood pressure, kidney disease, liver disease, diabetes, stroke and obesity. All of which are very deadly. Gout can and does kill!
Myth #7: I am overweight but that doesn’t have anything to do with my gout
Absolutely wrong!Excess body weight is strongly connected with hyperuricemia and gout. Probably the best thing you can do for your gout as well as your health is to loose weight and keep it off! Of course, no one wants to hear that, but if you have gout and are significantly overweight, you are all but guaranteed to get one of the deadly diseases I mentioned in the previous myth. Loosing weight and exercising regularly are the best ways to avoid these diseases.
Myth#8: Once an attack starts, there is nothing you can do by wait it out
Actually, if you act quickly, you can stop an attack an hour or so. How? Take some of the powerful non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) your doctor has given you at the very first sign of symptoms. If you have medical reasons why your can’t take NSAIDs, don’t worry, there are many other options including corticosteroids, ACTH and others. However, you should avoid colchicine in you can.
Myth #9: Food high in proteins are bad for gout
Food high in proteins actually lower uric acid levels and is good for gout. What matters is where the proteins come from. Meat proteins have been shown to raise uric acid levels while vegetable proteins have been shown to lower uric acid levels –even those that are high in purines.
Myth #10: Medical science knows little about gout
Actually, of all the thousands of diseases out there, gout is one of the best understood diseases. Doctors and scientists know exactly what causes the disease and how it progresses. What has happened over the years is that science has become bored with gout and little research has occurred since the 1970’s and 80’s. Doctors have collectively “forgotten” how to properly manage the disease correctly. Recently one research study showed that as many as 78% of doctors are managing gout improperly. Lately however, there has been a resurgence of interest, new medications are being developed and new research is being conducted to fill in the holes that remain.

AFTER six years on a prescription estrogen patch that alleviated her hot flashes, but did nothing to address her midlife 25-pound weight gain, Martha B. started searching for a natural alternative to treat her menopausal symptoms.
“When I couldn’t button my size 12 jeans, I just told myself ‘Enough’s enough,’ ” said the 57-year-old teacher who lives in Atlanta and requested that her full name not be used.
She turned to an over-the-counter supplement called Estroven, with ingredients that include black cohosh and phytoestrogens — botanical compounds found in soy and other plants that have been shown to have estrogenlike effects in humans.
Without changing her eating habits, Martha said she lost 20 pounds. But after four months off the patch, the hot flashes came back. Now, she said, she is wondering, “What do I do next?”
According to experts, about 70 percent of women experience hot flashes, weight gain, loss of libido and other symptoms as they transition from their fertile to postfertile years and their hormone levels fluctuate sharply. It’s a process that lasts an average of seven years.
Gynecologists estimate that a third of women seeking treatment for menopausal symptoms are on conventional prescription hormones. Another third are on prescription bio-identical therapy. (Bio-identical hormones are synthesized compounds that mimic the molecular structure of human hormones and are derived from plants.)
The remaining third either tough it out, are not bothered by symptoms or are searching for over-the-counter therapies, including natural supplements and topical creams. They may try, for example, a supplement of phytoestrogens derived from soy and red clover, a low-dose progesterone cream, or swear by black cohosh capsules.
In 2002, when the initial findings of a National Institutes of Health study — known as the Women’s Health Initiative project — suggested that women on conventional hormone therapy were at greater risk for heart disease, cancer, stroke and blood clotting, the market for alternative treatments soared. There are now more than 500 products that purport to relieve symptoms associated with menopause, including capsules, tablets, teas, gels and creams. In the United States, the dietary supplement market associated with menopause has grown to $337 million in 2007 (the last year tabulated) from $211 million in 1999, according to the Nutrition Business Journal, a trade publication.
“Ten years ago, it used to be that if you were a certain age, your doctor would hand you a prescription for hormone pills and that would be that,” said Karen Giblin, the director of Red Hot Mamas, an organization that offers educational programs and information on menopause. “Women were popping them like M&M’s. Now, so many women I speak with want to go natural. I call it ‘Happy Hour at the health food store.’ I see them there, say, at the Whole Foods, women of a certain age, poring over the labels of capsules and creams.”
But some, like Rebecca Hulem, a nurse practitioner and menopause coach in Agoura Hills, Calif., said there is confusion about the products. “Many of my patients come in with a bag of stuff they’ve been trying a few weeks here, a few months there, and tell me, ‘Sometimes this works, sometimes it doesn’t,’ ” she said. “They’re relying on word-of-mouth and Internet research or they go by the marking on the label.”
“Women have to be sophisticated consumers about their own health and whatever they’re taking, and ask themselves, ‘Is it safe? Is it effective?’ ” said Dr. Winnifred Cutler, author of “Hormones and Your Health: The Smart Woman’s Guide to Hormonal and Alternative Therapies for Menopause” (John Wiley & Sons, 2009). “Just because it’s natural, doesn’t mean it’s good for you.”
But some experts contend it is not the products that are harmful, but how they are used. “I think over all these products are generally safe, but must be taken in the right circumstances and in conjunction with a mindfully healthy approach to life if they are going to be effective at all,” said Dr. Theresa Ramsey, director of the Center for Natural Healing in Paradise Valley, Ariz.
Still, some studies have questioned the efficacy of progesterone creams, and whether they can even be adequately absorbed through the skin. Other experts have suggested that even small amounts of progesterone can accumulate in fat cells and disrupt the production and synthesis of other hormones. Some studies suggest that the use of soy supplements may lead to an increased risk of breast cancer and other hormone-related cancers in some women.
“There is a lot of confusion,” said Dee Adams, who runs minniepauz.com, a Web site devoted to menopause. “A lot of women went cold turkey after the Women’s Health Initiative results came out. They stopped trusting their doctors. They stopped trusting the pharmaceutical companies. Many see these natural treatments as a way of taking back control of their bodies. The problem is, we have no idea of what’s in them.”
Dr. Tod Cooperman, director of consumerLab.com, a private health, wellness and nutrition product-testing lab, said last year his company studied more than a dozen menopause products. Five failed to gain the lab’s approval, including two products that contained less soy and red clover than their labels indicated, and a black cohosh product in which traces of lead were found.
“Whether or not a product actually contains an ingredient and how much of it, we can’t say,” said Dr. Norman Farnsworth, the principal investigator of a 12-month study of black cohosh and red clover, a collaboration between the Center for Botanical Dietary Supplements Research of the University of Illinois at Chicago and at Northwestern University. The study was paid for by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine and the Office of Dietary Supplements. Results are due in the fall, and the study’s researchers are hoping it will help determine the efficacy of the ingredients associated with menopause symptom relief.
But, the fact remains that even if black cohosh, for example, is found to deliver on its promise to reduce hot flashes, women may still find themselves confused when they are about to reach for something off the shelf.
“There could be a lot of sawdust in there,” Dr. Farnsworth said.
