Natural remedies for strengthening the heart tend to help significantly with symptoms such as arrhythmia and angina, and can also make a big difference in people with congestive heart failure. Three of the most effective are coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), hawthorn berries, and carnitine. The information in this article is taken from Presciption Alternatives (Bottom Lines, pp. 100-101, authored by Earl L. Mindell, RPh with Virginia Hopkins, MA). Note: It is very important to talk to your doctor and get his OK before taking any supplements.

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10)

CoQ10 has the ability to protect and strengthen the heart and lower blood pressure. CoQ10 is a vital enzyme, a catalyst to the production of energy in our cells. Without it, our cells simply won’t work. It’s chemical name is ubiquinone – it is ubiquitous, or everywhere, where there is life. Its levels in the human body are highest in the heart and liver. When we are ill or stressed, and as we age, our bodies are less able to produce CoQ10.

According to a study done by CoQ10 expert Karl Folkers, published in the International Journal of Vitamin and Nutrition Research, patients with a variety of cardiac disorders consistently demonstrate a blood deficiency of CoQ10. A double-blind Japanese study with 10 patients who had cardiac failure showed that only 30 mg per day of CoQ10 for two to four weeks produced a measurable improvement in symptoms. Many older people whose heart function has degenerated and who try CoQ10 report an almost immediate boost in their energy levels.

People who suffer from angina report that the pain disappears and they can exercise. In a double-blind placebo study using CoQ10 and other drugs traditionally used to treat angina , it was found that CoQ10 was far more effective in reducing or eliminating angina pain than any of the other medications. Other studies have shown that people on heart medications can greatly reduce their dosage of medicine if it is combined with CoQ10.

Statin drugs, which are being taken by millions of people to control high cholesterol — which is thought to be a significant risk factor for heart disease — deplete the body’s stores of CoQ10. In other words, by taking a drug that’s supposed to reduce the risk of heart disease, these millions may actually be increasing it. If you have to take a statin drug such as Zocor or Pravachol, be sure to supplement with CoQ10.

This nutrient is a valuble natural therapy for periodontal disease. Following the dosage instructions below will have the fringe benefit of clearing up inflammed gums. Interestingly, people with chronic periodontal disease have significantly higher risk of heart disease. Some research indicates that this connection has to do with elevated inflammatory levels throughout the body, but it may also have to do with CoQ10 depletion.

The best way to take CoQ10 is in a gel capsule, with the CoQ10 absorbed in soy oil. Oil-based supplements are more bioavailable — and therefore more potent — because CoQ10 is a fat-soluble nutrient. You can take one 30 to 60 mg capsule up to three times a day with meals. If you have serious heart disease, you can double that amount for a few months. Always get your doctor’s OK before using any supplements.

Hawthorn Berries

Hawthorn berries have been used as heart tonic for centuries and are widely used in Europe for angina and for lowering blood pressure. They are rich in bioflavonoids, which help strengthen the blood vessels. they are also a vasodilator, which increases the flow of blood and oxygen to the heart, lowers blood pressure and strengthens the heart muscle.

Hawthorne berries work gradually, and you may not notice a difference for a month or so. You can find hawthorn berry extract in capsule or tincture forms. Because the amount vary widely. follow directions for use on the bottle. Some of the tinctures can be very powerful, so it is very important that if you’re already on heart medicine you work with your doctor.

Carnitine

This amino acid is another heart-strengthening nutrient that appears to be especially useful for treating angina and congestive heart failure.

I’m going to share this email about EDTA Chelation from Dr. Michael Cutler (TrueHealth.com). There are so many websites out there that talk about the negative effects on EDTA Chelation. You can read Dr. Cutler’s message below. . .

Most practicing physicians are completely unaware that less than 20 percent of all biomedical scientific literature (including all languages) is available to you on the National Library of Medicine’s Index Medicus and its public MEDLINE access at www.pubmed.com. Therefore, doing a computer search for positive outcome studies using EDTA chelation therapy in the treatment of cardiovascular conditions will be deceptively negative.

Fortunately, there are a few who know how to expose misleading study design or those studies in which researchers report negative interpretations of what are actually positive results. More specifically, these negative misleading reports were the 153-patient Danish study, the 17-patient New Zealand study, the 20-infusion Heidelberg Trial, the Canadian PATCH study and several such studies used to persuade and confuse.

Unfortunately, once they publish their junk reports in mainstream medical journals to discredit EDTA chelation, the professional community becomes misled and biased against chelation.

In fact, you will find that most of the peer-reviewed literature available on the National Library of Medicine’s public access website (www.pubmed.com) is quite stacked with negative results and opinions towards the use of EDTA chelation for conditions other than lead poisoning.

For example, authors stated the following: “Edetate disodium (EDTA) is a chelating agent which has no place in the treatment of atherosclerosis and its complications. Also, its toxic effects can cause other problems which may lead to a fatal outcome. Proper investigation and treatment may sometimes be delayed by a patient’s faith in such therapy.”

Do not be too alarmed, as this same author published an opinion paper in another Australian journal entitled, “Quacks: fakers and charlatans in medicine.” In this “scientific paper” he exposes his ignorance of valuable natural therapies by his dogmatic comments: “Alternative medicine has always had an attraction for some members of the community, and this has extended into the 20th century. Examples are given of therapies, such as that for the treatment of cancer and arterial disease, in recent years that can only be described as modern-day quackery.”

Yet there are thousands of physicians who have witnessed the value of chelation therapy in practice and who are familiar with the supporting literature (remember, there is no financial incentive tied to chelation therapy).

For example, these authors, who are also published in peer-reviewed scientific journals, state direct opposition: “The authors conclude that EDTA chelation therapy is a valuable therapeutic option for vascular disease—either alone or in conjunction with standard treatment protocols.”

And a seasoned scientist from the University of California Berkeley published the following: “EDTA chelation therapy appears to achieve revitalization of the myocardium, and is a viable alternative or adjunct to revascularization. Fish oils are now proven to help revitalize vessel wall endothelia and to partially reverse atherosclerotic damage. Being safe and having proven benefits, chelation therapy and fish oils can be integrated together with nutrients, lifestyle-dietary revision, exercise and medications as necessary, into a cardiovascular revitalization strategy.”

You will also find that these latter authors present various interventions that are proven beneficial in their papers, while the anti-chelationists report only the negative information about chelation.

You might also be interested to know that statistical analyses of the more carefully performed studies on chelation show that the probability that these positive results are due to random chance alone ranges from less than one in 1,000 to less than one in 10,000!

You deserve to be informed of the risks and benefits of all types of valuable interventions, not just the ones that are highly profitable for doctors and pharmaceutical companies. So be sure to do your research and find out the best course of action for yourself!

“Cardiovascular… the deadly disease that killed Tim Russert (NBC Meet the Press host)” was the news that I’ve heard early this morning on the CBS Early Morning Show.

I’ve also read an article today at Natural News: “According to Russert’s internist, Michael A. Newman, Russert knew he had been diagnosed with coronary artery disease but believed he was “controlling” it with “medication and exercise.” I’m just wondering – did Tim Russert change his diet too?

I am going to share with you this article (below) on cardiovascular disease that I read 2 weeks ago. This article was written by 2 health ministry directors of the Seventh-day Adventists. The Seventh-day Adventists highly promote vegetarian lifestyle. “They do not have habits of smoking or drinking, and exercise is an important part of their lifestyle. As a people they have one day of rest each week in which they totally unplug and that is called the Sabbath. These factors seem to play a significant role in their longevity. According to recent research, that was done by National Geographic, Seventh-day Adventists outlive their American counterparts by up to 10 years.”(1) Read National Geographic excerpt » Longevity, The Secrets of Long Life

Research studies show that vegetarians have lower rates of cancer, heart disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and obesity than meat eaters. British researchers say vegetarians have a 20% lower risk of fatal heart disease and a 40% lower risk of cancer. Researchers on other studies were amazed to discover that among the vegetarian Adventists, death rates from cancer were 50-70% lower than among other Americans. (2)

Here’s the Cardiovascular Disease article:

How much of a problem is cardiovascular disease to those not living in Western countries?

Your question is very relevant, because cardiovascular disease has often been described as a disease found in developed or Western societies.

Unfortunately, bad habits seem to be learned much more quickly than good ones, and consequently, we are now seeing an increasing number of cardiovascular deaths in developing countries. This increase is taking place while the mortality rate for cardiovascular disease has actually declined slightly in United States.

Cardiovascular Disease – Vegetarian Diet Importance

Lifestyle factors are clearly and overwhelmingly important. Many studies show that the 2-3% of individuals who eat a vegetarian diet that includes nuts, whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and who exercise regularly, have very few cardiovascular deaths. But there is increasing evidence that the cholesterol story we have both taught and learned is not as straightforward as was once thought.

Cardiovascular Disease on Global Basis

Predictors other than cholesterol, such as vitamin D levels and inflammation indicators such C-reactive protein, may have as much significance for prognosis as cholesterol levels. Of concern is the increasing rate of cardiovascular disease in women. Cardiovascular disease, on a global basis, is actually much more of a serious problem than is HIV infection. China has one of the highest stroke rates, and much of this can be related to smoking. We often think the United States must have the highest cardiovascular disease rates (i.e., strokes and heart attacks). This is not true, however. Many other countries have higher mortality rates from cardiovascular disease. India, China, Argentina, and Scotland have high rates.

Diet is clearly a factor, but by no means the only factor. By 2020, tobacco will be the single greatest health hazard worldwide.

While there has been a decline in smoking in the Western world, it is skyrocketing in the world at large.

Cardiovascular Disease – Exercise and Plant-based Diet

Exercise is a wonder-worker even in obese persons. Obese individuals who exercise experience half the cardiovascular disease of those who are inactive. It makes little sense to be a dietary fanatic as a couch potato. This does not mean exercise compensates for obesity, because both unhealthful diet and lack of exercise are independent risk factors for cardiovascular disease.

Fruits and vegetables markedly increase one’s chance of avoiding cardiovascular disease, as does the consumption of an ounce of nuts at least a few times a week.

While some people promote fish consumption, it has the same profile as red meat in causing colon cancer.

No matter where one lives, the classic 5 elements of a healthful lifestyle — regular exercise, a plant-based diet, whole grains, nuts and water as the principal fluid result in reduced cardiovascular risk.

The largest lifestyle problem facing the world’s population is the reduction of tobacco consumption. Elimination should be our goal, but for those not motivated, as Adventists are by spiritual concerns, the expectation of the total elimination of global tobacco usage is not realistic.

Cardiovascular Disease Intervention: Exercise

The second most rewarding lifestyle intervention, on a global basis, would be to exercise more. We need 150 minutes of moderately hard exercise a week. This means exercise should induce a light sweat to be of sufficient intensity.

Chelation comes from the Greek word “kehle”, which means “claw”.

Chelation therapy claws, grabs and scours the heavy metals, plaque buildup and cholesterol deposits from the walls of your arteries. This natural remedy helps improve blood flow to the heart and other organs. Good health depends on a steady and adequate supply of oxygen in the body. Our arteries deliver the blood that carries oxygen to different organs of our body. If more oxygen circulates, it boosts our energy and enhances our health.

As we live day by day we’ve been absorbing toxins from the foods we eat, water we drink, and pollutants from the environment. When these toxic substances get accumulated in our arteries, the blood cannot flow freely in the passages. Therefore, the oxygen supply is also minimized and led us to poor health. Then we are susceptible to different health problems such as poor circulation, heart and brain problems, eye diseases, low energy and sexual difficulties.

Heart problem is the number one cause of death and disability in the America. It doesn’t affect to adults only. It can begin at a very young age. If irregularities occur in our circulatory system we will be at risk of developing a serious health problem.

EDTA, (scientist call it—ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid) is the active ingredient in chelation therapy. It is so powerful at destroying free radicals, and flushing heavy metals out of the body—up to 82% effective at dissolving dangerous artery plaque. It’s approved by the US Food and Drug Administration and the USDA as an additive to keep the foods we eat from turning rancid!

The US Navy had used chelation therapy to claw toxic lead deposits out of the bodies of sailors working on military ships. About this natural remedy, according Dr. Linus Pauling, two-time Nobel Prize-winning scientist, “Published research and extensive clinical experience showed that EDTA helps reduce and prevent arteriosclerotic plaques, thus improving blood flow to the heart and other organs. EDTA chelation therapy might eliminate the need for bypass surgery.Chelation has an equally valid rationale for use as preventive treatment.”

But there was a problem in chelation therapy. It was expensive, time consuming, and painful. You had to drive to the nearest chelation clinic, get poked with an I.V. (intravenous) needle into your vein, and wait for at least 3 hours while EDTA was pumped into your body through the I.V. For a single session you can get a $300 bill, and it usually requires at least 10 sessions—that’s $3,000! But thankfully, an enhanced oral chelation is available.
