Wellness 101: Natural remedies for common viral and fungal foot complaints

Examiner.com Athlete’s Foot, Toenail Fungus, Plantar Warts, oh my! Fungal and viral conditions of the feet can be unsightly and painful.

Plantar Warts

These uncomfortable warts are caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV) and feature growths with small ‘heads’ in the center.

After thoroughly washing both feet with soapy, warm water (try Castile soap) and drying thoroughly try using duct tape to suffocate the wart. This requires patience and persistence! Cut the duct tape so it will cover the whole wart and some of the skin surrounding it. Wear it at all times and replace the tape if it gets wet in the shower or from sweating. Some folks notice the wart dissappears or falls off within a week or so of continuous oxygen deprivation.

Mischa Schuler of Wild Carrot Herbs in Cambridge recommends using Blood Root, Greater Celendine, and Goldenseal topically for plantar warts. She notes “Only one of these mentioned needs to be used, not all three at once.” Schuler goes on to say “Internally, we begin thinking about anti-virals and general immune builders. Plantar warts are an indication that overall immunity is down a bit.” Schuler can offer herb recommendations to go along with a topical treatment that will support the body’s overall immune system, give her a call to setup an appointment!

Athlete’s Foot

This is a skin disease caused by a fungus most commonly showing up between the toes as an itchy, burning rash. Mild cases tend to respond well to keeping the feet dry and clean. Massachusetts-based herbalist Mariam Massaro offers WiseWays Herbal Tea Tree Foot Powder. Find it at many of the local Whole Foods or Reading’s Natural Food Exchange on Main Street.

Nail Fungus

This stubborn condition occurs on toenails and can cause brittleness, discoloration (yellowing), thickening and changes in the shape of the nail. Most natural health practitioners recommend avoiding nail polishes and such that trap moisture and the fungus in the nail. Regular ventillation through sandals is also commonly recommended for home care.

ZetaClear is a relatively new product used for nail fungus with natural ingredients such as jojoba plant ester, almond oil, lemongrass and clove essential oils. Another home remedy, in nearly everyone’s pantry, is apple cider vinegar. The thought is to soak the toes in the vinegar daily until the nails began to lose the fungus.

Seeing a Clinician

When pain or conditions persist it is best to consult your primary care physician. He may refer you to a dermatologist or a podiastrist, depening on the condition, or may be able to offer you several choices for treatment. Some conditions may simply run their course while others may require an aggressive treatment plan. Seek advice from a clinician to prevent worsening symptoms.

(NaturalNews) Everyone at some point in their lives has suffered from a horrendous case of morning breath – the type that makes your partner’s eyes water or that the kids cower away from. For most of us the cure is simple, a quick brush followed by a gargle of mouth wash and you are set for the day. But for some this simply isn`t enough and the problem of halitosis or bad breath simply will not go away.

There are a number of different things that can cause halitosis, but having a dry mouth is one of the main culprits. Saliva is the mouth’s natural defense against bacteria. So when your mouth is dry there is no defense against the odor causing molecules that can cause halitosis. Having an excessively dry mouth can be caused by alcohol, certain medicines, stress and some medical conditions. Other causes of halitosis are dental hygiene or lack of it, nasal infections, foods that are high in protein and smoking, which starves the mouth of oxygen.

It can be a very embarrassing problem that has been known to lead to many social and mental problems. Many people who suffer from halitosis simply won`t talk in group situations and refuse to go out as they are afraid that people will be put off by the smell. This type of self seclusion can cause severe depression and has even been known to lead to weight gain as sufferers take up comfort eating to fill the deep void that has taken over their lives.

Cures For Halitosis

As with most ailments there are literally hundreds of old wives’ tales floating around that are said to cure halitosis, but which of them actually work?

Baking soda is involved in a lot of home remedy theories, most of them being completely false. But when it comes to helping cure halitosis there might be something in the baking soda story. Brushing your teeth and tongue with just a little baking soda is thought to make the mouth a little less hospitable and to stop bacteria from growing. You can even buy tooth paste that contains small amounts of baking soda so that there is no need to brush your teeth twice.

Homemade tea tree mouthwashes have become a very popular way of combating halitosis. This is because tea tree is known to be a powerful disinfectant that helps kill bacteria. There are many different ingredients you can add to this such as peppermint to make your breath extra fresh, but the basics are a cup of warm water and a few drops of tea tree oil. Use this to rinse you mouth out at least twice a day and you should notice a massive difference.

Examiner.com The fifth death from Swine flu was just reported in Orange County, when a 56 year old woman succumbed to the disease. The World Health Organization (WHO) is predicting that two billion people could become sick during this ‘pandemic.’ Vaccines are being tested on humans even now, as the prediction of an early flu season is coming to pass. While WHO and other medical professionals are proponents of the vaccines to prevent flu, other professionals find natural remedies work much better without the fear of physical repercussions. Most people understand the common sense rules; wash your hands frequently, get plenty of rest and exercise. Local schools and businesses are armed with hand sanitizer and ‘stay home if you’re sick’ policies. Be practical, but you may want to take it a step further with some natural remedies.

Dr. Joseph Mercola (www.mercola.com) recommends a daily dose of Vitamin D, and an increase omega-3 fats. Cod liver oil supplies both (your Mama was right!). Foods like shrimp, salmon, cod and organic mushrooms will build up the Vitamin D you need, or take a vitamin supplement. Flaxseed oil snuck into your favorite foods won’t add taste, but will add the necessary omega-3 oils. (See http://planetgreen.discovery.com for more information). Dr. Mercola stands by these natural remedies as a way to build your immune system, and prevent any type of flu. Stay away from sugar, as it will take you a step back.

Dire predictions of swine flu sweeping our world are prevalent. Even at the first symptom, put your feet up, drink lots of liquids, have a little chicken soup, and try these home remedies. Of course, call your doctor if symptoms worsen.

-One tablespoon of honey with a half teaspoon of cinnamon will help with a cold, sore throat and nasal congestion.

-Add basil to steaming water and inhale for lung congestion.

-Drink some soothing lemon or green tea to clear your head and throat.

-Chew on garlic if you can stand it.

For more suggestions, go to www.alsearsmd.com.

While the flu season is inevitable, take a dose of common sense determined by a surge of education. Get involved in your own prevention or cure. Ask your health care professional to make sure you’re doing all the right things, and of course if the flu catches up with you.

Swine Flu Protection – Natural and Herbal Remedies

By: Dhanya Joy

Powai – 16 August 09 Swine flu, caused by the H1N1 virus, is a fast spreading pandemic and many are turning to natural and herbal remedies for its prevention and cure. Swine flu natural remedies can effectively treat swine flu symptoms and prevent their spread. Read on to know more, about the various herbal remedies for swine flu.

Swine flu is a disease of the respiratory system, caused by the H1N1 virus or type A influenza virus, and has been declared as a pandemic by the World Health Organization. Initially, swine flu was reported only in pigs, but of recent, a considerable number of cases of swine flu in humans too, have been reported all over the world. Cases of swine flu are rising on a daily basis and this calls for different treatment options that are effective in relieving swine flu symptoms. It also calls for more awareness on its causes, symptoms and treatments.

Though the most popular treatment adopted by those suffering from swine flu is allopathic medication, it does not cure swine flu, it merely controls or reduces the symptoms. It is assumed, that subsiding the symptoms is as good as curing them, but in most cases the symptoms tend to reoccur. Swine flu natural remedies and swine flu herbal remedies are better treatment options, and they are also free of side effects that are generally caused by allopathic medicines.

Homeopathy

Swine flu was successfully treated by homeopathic medication, in the swine flu epidemic of 1918. Homeopathy is a natural form of treatment and has no side effects. Homeopathic medicines that have been effective for the treatment of swine flu are: gelsemium, bryonia, oscillococcinum and eupatorium. Homeopathic medicines are derived from animal, plant and natural sources. These medicines may require some time to show their effect and the symptoms may also aggravate during their use, but the disease gets completely cured and does not relapse, once the homeopathic course is completed.

Ayurveda

Ayurveda has the best form of herbal remedies for swine flu. Ayurvedic medicines are made of pure natural substances and herbs and are also very effective in the prevention of swine flu. Ayurvedic medicines used as a remedy to relieve swine flu symptoms contain herbs like neem (Indian lilac), elderberry, ginger and pepper extracts. Once the symptoms have reduced, herbs such as triphala, echinacea, etc. can be taken to eliminate all the symptoms completely. Ayurveda boosts the immune system against the H1N1 virus. Echinacea is an important ayurvedic medicine used to treat all kinds of flu and is also essential in natural swine flu prevention. It works by treating infections and increasing the body’s resistance against organisms.

Other Herbs

Other herbs that are useful in the treatment of swine flu include, adaptogens, olive leaves , oregano oil and traditional Chinese medicinal herbs like eleutherococcus, shisandra and codonopsis. Adaptogens are very effective antiviral herbs, that are resistant to biological and chemical stressors. Shishandra is used to treat viral flu and codonopsis strengthens the immune system by increasing the white blood cell and the red blood cell counts.

Supplements

Consuming dietary and vitamin supplements like vitamin C, vitamin D, etc. and certain probiotics can be useful in the treatment and prevention of swine flu. The supplements strengthen the immune system, to fight against the viruses and organisms causing swine flu.

Swine Flu Home Remedies

There are various home remedies that can be effective in relieving swine flu symptoms, along with the natural remedies for swine flu.

A mixture of 1 tbsp of honey with 1/2 tbsp cinnamon powder can be consumed. This will relieve swine flu symptoms like cold, nasal congestion and sore throat.

Steam inhalation with basil leaves added to the water, can also be helpful in relieving swine flu symptoms and relieving lung congestion.

Chewing fresh garlic cloves is another effective home remedy as garlic is a good antiviral.

Consuming lemon tea can relieve symptoms like cough, sore throat, headaches, etc.

Washing hands regularly and covering of the mouth and nose, while venturing out, is an important method of swine flu prevention.

Along with the treatment for swine flu, consuming liquids and taking adequate rest and sleep is very essential.

Swine flu can be treated effectively using the above mentioned herbs and remedies, and is a healthier option compared to the treatment with allopathic medicines and anti-virals. Natural swine flu prevention is the best remedy to stop the rapid spread of swine flu.

Mild headaches: Tiger balm. Chinese ointment contains menthol and can ease pain when rubbed into neck or temples.

Arthritis pain: Turmeric, fish oil. All show promise in helping ease pain. Talk to your healthcare professional for dosage.

COLD CURES

Elderberry syrup: Research suggests it can fight the flu and may ease symptoms of cold.

Garlic: What you eat matters! Get plenty of raw or lightly cooked garlic, which contains antiviral compounds. Add thyme to soups and salad dressing.

COUGH

Eucalyptus oil in a pot of boiling water can help loosen phlegm. Just tent a towel over your head and breathe deeply.

Licorice root and marshmallow root can also help calm a cough – look for teas containing these herbs and sip throughout the day. For example, a tea called Organic Throat Coat combines several herbs.

CONSTIPATION

High fiber foods: Eat plenty of fruits, veggies, whole grains and beans. Sprinkle some ground flaxseed on cereal or in smoothies. Also, drink plenty of room-temperature water.

Triphala: Herbal supplement from the Ayurvedic tradition that can get things moving. Take supplement as noted on bottle.

ALLERGY

Quercetin: This flavonoid compound, found in apples and onions, can also help fight allergy symptoms. It’s preventive, though, so allow 6-8 weeks to build it up in your system. Typical dose: 400 mg twice a day between meals.

Stinging nettle: In tincture, teas or freeze-dried capsules. Consume half teaspoon of tincture three times a day, a month before allergy season. Drink 2-3 cups of nettle tea, or follow directions on capsule bottle.

MORE FROM BODY + SOUL MAGAZINE

Here’s the lowdown on how to treat five common ailments with natural approaches.

Pain Relief

For mild headaches, consider Tiger Balm, says Andrew Weil, M.D., author of the upcoming “Why Our Health Matters.” This Chinese ointment contains menthol, which creates a warm, tingling feeling that eases pain when rubbed into your neck or temples.

Massaging a few drops of lavender essential oil onto your temples may also help for headaches triggered by stress, says herbalist Deb Soule, author of “A Woman’s Book of Herbs.” Indeed, past research has shown that lavender can promote relaxation. Or try plant remedies with a long history of traditional use and supporting scientific evidence: “Willow bark and meadowsweet both have anti-inflammatory properties that may help relieve headaches,” Soule explains.

Take 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of tincture as needed at the first sign of symptoms. For arthritis pain, turn to turmeric, boswellia, or fish oil, which all show promise in recent research; talk to a health-care practitioner about the best form and dosage.

Cold Cures

Take a dropperful of echinacea tincture in water four times a day at the first sign of symptoms, until they subside. Some studies have shown it can shorten colds, though results are mixed. Soule has found that elderberry syrup, which research suggests can fight flu, may also ease symptoms of a common cold. Take according to directions until a few days after symptoms have disappeared.

Diet matters, too; eat plenty of raw or lightly cooked garlic, which contains antiviral compounds, and add thyme to soups or salad dressings. You also might try a neti pot, an Aladdin’s lamp-shaped vessel that you fill with warm salt water and use to irrigate congested nasal passages.

Cough Control

When you find yourself hacking, try natural remedies first, says Weil. Loosen phlegm and make coughs more productive by adding crushed eucalyptus or sage leaves to a pot of boiling water, carefully tenting a towel over your head, and breathing in deeply. Certain herbs may also help calm a cough; Soule’s favorites include mullein leaf, licorice root, and marshmallow root. Look for teas containing one or more of these herbs, and sip a few cups throughout the day.

Constipation Remedy

Stay regular with dietary adjustments: Eat plenty of high-fiber foods such as fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and beans, and sprinkle freshly ground flaxseed on cereal or in smoothies. Also, be sure to drink plenty of room-temperature water.

If you need a supplement, try triphala. This Ayurvedic remedy “helps move the bowels and can be taken every day,” says Soule. Drink a 1/2 teaspoon of powder in a 1/4 cup of hot water. Psyllium, a fiber supplement derived from the husks of plant seeds, is another good choice, says Weil. Start with a rounded tablespoon of the powder stirred into a glass of water. Drink that and follow with another full glass of water.

Allergy Assistance

The steam inhalation described in Cough Control can also break up nasal congestion, says Weil, though it’s not a core remedy for allergies. For seasonal allergies such as hay fever, he recommends the herb butterbur, shown to ease allergies without causing drowsiness. Look for brands guaranteed free of pyrrolizidine alkaloids, naturally occurring compounds that have been linked to liver damage. The herb, also indicated for migraine relief, is generally taken at meals in 50 to 100 mg dosages twice a day.

Quercetin, a flavonoid compound found in apples and onions, may also help fight allergy symptoms. Since quercetin is preventive, allow six to eight weeks for it to build up in your system. A typical dose is 400 mg twice a day between meals. Soule has also found tinctures, teas, or freeze-dried capsules of stinging nettles helpful. Take 1/2 teaspoon of tincture three times a day, starting a month before allergy season; two to three cups of nettle tea; or follow directions on the bottle for capsules.

What is Osteoarthritis?
Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease that affects the knees, hips, back, and small joints in the fingers.

Osteoarthritis affects over 20 million people in the United States, a figure that is expected to double in the next 20 years.

Osteoarthritis Pain Relief Remedies
Here are five natural remedies that are used to provide pain relief for people with osteoarthritis.

1) Avocado/Soybean Unsaponifiables

Avocado/soybean unsaponifiables are one of the most promising arthritis remedies. Four high-quality clinical trials suggest that avocado/soybean unsaponifiables, an extract made from avocado and soybean oils, can improve the pain and stiffness of knee and hip osteoarthritis and reduce the need for non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). It appears to have decrease inflammation and stimulate cartilage repair.

In France, avocado/soybean unsaponifiables have been approved as a prescription drug. In other countries, it is available as a supplement in some health food stores or online.

A typical dose is 300 milligrams per day. It usually takes between two weeks and two months to take effect. Studies have found no additional benefit with higher doses.

Eating avocado and soy, even in large amounts, will not provide enough of the unsaponifiables to have a therapeutic effect. Only 1/100th of the oil is the unsaponifiable portion.

The safety of avocado/soybean unsaponifiables has not been established in children, pregnant or nursing women.

2) Glucosamine and Chondroitin Sulfate

At least 5 million people in the United States take glucosamine or chondroitin alone or in combination. Glucosamine is used to make a molecule involved in the formation and repair of cartilage, the rubbery substance that cushions joints. Although it’s still not clear exactly how glucosamine in pill-form works, it’s believed to allow more of cartilage building blocks to be made. Chondroitin sulfate appears to to block cartilage-destroying enzymes and help joint cartilage remain elastic and supple.

Studies with glucosamine have found a reduction in the pain, stiffness, and swelling of arthritis. It is also thought to prevent structural damage to joints. In a study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, participants took glucosamine or placebo for three years and were x-rayed each year to assess structural changes. Participants who took the placebo had progressive joint space narrowing, a sign of cartilage degeneration, but those who took glucosamine had no significant narrowing of joint spaces.

The dose used in studies is 1500 mg glucosamine sulfate and 800 to 1200 mg chondroitin sulfate. It’s important to choose glucosamine sulfate, rather than hydrochloride, because many of the clinical studies have used the sulfate form. It usually takes 1 to 3 months to take effect. Side effects may include mild stomach discomfort, which can be alleviated by taking glucosamine with meals. Some glucosamine supplements are derived from the shells of crabs and other shellfish, so people with shellfish allergies should ensure they use synthetic glucosamine.

3) Acupuncture

The World Health Organization has identified more than 40 conditions that acupuncture can treat, including osteoarthritis. Acupuncture involves the insertion of hair-thin needles into acupoints in the body. It is believed to rebalance the flow of energy, or qi, in the body. Studies have found that acupuncture releases natural pain-relieving substances such as endorphins and serotonin.

A study involving 294 people with osteoarthritis knee pain found that after eight weeks of treatment, participants who had acupuncture experienced a significant improvement in pain and joint function compared to those who had sham acupuncture or placebo.

4) Yoga

Although many people think yoga involves twisting your body into pretzel-like poses, yoga can be safe and effective for people with osteoarthritis. Yoga’s gentle movements can keep build strength, flexibility, and balance and reduce arthritis pain and stiffness.

A pilot study conducted by the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine examined one type of yoga, Iyengar yoga, for people with osteoarthritis of the knee. After an 8-week course of weekly 90-minute beginner classes, there was a statistically significant reduction in pain, physical function, and mood.

If you have osteoarthritis, it’s important to take some simple precautions before trying yoga. Talk with your doctor and ask about any restrictions.
Look for a teacher who has worked with people with arthritis and can suggest modifications for you. Some hospitals and community centers offer yoga classes geared to people with arthritis.

5) Massage Therapy

Massage can help to relieve muscle tension associated with osteoarthritis. Joint pain can cause surrounding muscles to become tense. Massage boosts circulation to the affected joint, which decreases joint stiffness and promotes cartilage repair. Massage therapists do this not by directly massaging an inflamed joint, but the muscles surrounding the joint.

Massage can also prevent muscle spasms in other parts of the body. Osteoarthritis is usually one-sided, which can make muscles elsewhere tense as they try to compensate for the weakened joint.

Examiner.com Today it is not uncommon for children to be diagnosed with ADD / ADHD. Attention Deficit Disorder may be diagnosed with or without hyperactivity. These disorders affect children and adults alike and are characterized by an inability to focus and a tendency toward impulsive behavior. Although diagnosed as a psychological condition, ADHD is becoming quite common and doubts have arisen as to whether it is properly characterized as such. The characterization of this disorder allows doctors and psychologists to prescribe medication for the condition. Often, educators will recommend that children be tested for ADHD if they are disruptive or demonstrate an inability to learn in the traditional fashion. This results in various diagnoses of and pharmacological treatments for ADHD in young people.

Is medication the right course of action for this common phenomenon? Before we decide whether medication is appropriate it is necessary to take a look at just what the medication is. One of the most common prescribed drugs for ADHD is Ritalin. Ritalin is the product brand name for methylphenidate, which is a stimulant with properties similar to amphetamines, methamphetamines and cocaine. Without further exploring the details of these drugs, it is clear that providing them for children is a dangerous and scary proposition. Young children should not be asked to take drugs that could alter their body chemistries indefinitely to suit society’s need for calm, obedient children.

There are other options. Careful diet and daily routine adjustments, as well as visitation to natural and holistic professionals have proven successful in many, if not a majority, of cases. Here in Jacksonville, Dr. Schaeffer-Pautz of Persephone Healing Arts Center has experience treating children and adults who experience ADD/ADHD symptoms, taking their individual needs into account. Her treatments are safe, natural and unique to the individual. Aside from locating a professional, there are some things that parents can do at home to try to help improve the condition of a hyperactive or ADD diagnosed child.

Limit and or eliminate television
Most pediatricians agree that children under 3 should not watch television. Television for children over 3 years of age should also be limited if not eliminated as well. Television creates an atmosphere where children’s imaginations are not necessary. Therefore children who watch an extreme amount of t.v. lose their ability to play independently, expecting to be constantly entertained from the outside. This need to be entertained can also translate to an inability for children to focus and a lack of an acceptable attention span for their age group. Aside from causing focus, concentration and attention span challenges, television encourages inactivity in children. Lack of exercise and playtime can lead to obesity and health issues.

Eliminate processed foods
Processed foods that are often given to children can contain various different items that have been known to contribute to the ADD/ADHD phenomenon in children. Within processed foods such as chips, baked sweets, and many other items are preservatives, dyes, refined sugars and flours and many other ingredients that are not only difficult for a child’s digestive system, but can also create chemical and sugar imbalances. Snacks such as vegetables and fruits will provide children with much-needed nutrients instead of undesirable preservatives and dyes. Since getting children to eat vegetables and fruits isn’t always the easiest task in the world some preparation time might be in order to make it a bit more appealing. Apples or celery can be made more appealing if they have a nut butter spread over them or served on the side as a dip. Shredded apples and carrots with just a touch of cinnamon can make a nice salad for kids to enjoy. How about a smoothie with your child’s favorite fruit?

Eliminate sugar laden drinks
Sodas and juices are hidden sources of calories, refined sugars, and high fructose corn syrup. Frequent spikes in blood sugar (especially true where refined sugars are concerned) tend to stress the body and, over time, can throw off the body’s chemistry. The very best drink you can give your child is plain, clean and filtered water. Children who are used to receiving high sugar drinks will protest at first, but as other options become unavailable they will eventually grow to enjoy their water and opt to leave the sweet drinks behind, realizing their bodies feel better that way.

Try an elimination diet for food sensitivities
Many children with attention deficit also have undiagnosed food sensitivities. Specific foods are not digested properly, causing an imbalance in their system. Parents can try eliminating the most common foods causing those sensitivities to see if children’s behavior and or attention span will improve. Wheat, dairy, chocolate, corn, eggs, and soy are often found to produce reactions in children and adults. Parents can try eliminating all of these foods and adding them back one by one, or eliminating one at a time to see if improvement occurs. It is often a good idea to seek the aid of a nutritionist when attempting an elimination diet to make sure that a child is receiving proper nutrients while sources of the diet are being altered.

Find a source of essential fatty acids
Children with ADD/ADHD could be lacking in their essential fatty acids. Sometimes an indication is eczema or dry skin, other times there is no external indication. There are many types of fatty acids supplements that can be found at your local health foods store that are specifically made for children. Be sure to choose a brand that is tested for and guaranteed to be mercury free.

Try a probiotic
Probiotics replace the good bacteria in the digestive system to aid in digestion and distribution of essential nutrients. Yogurt can be a healthy source of probiotics and can be eaten or added to a smoothie. For those children who are dairy sensitive there are now many tasty yogurts that come dairy-free. Probiotics can also be purchased in capsule or powder form. Remember to buy organic to avoid exposure to pesticides, hormones and antibiotics.

As our children’s guardians it is our job to see them safely through their transition to adulthood. We do this by using our instincts, knowledge, experience and community. As we teach them, so they will teach their children. It is important to note that an ADD/ADHD diagnosis does not and should not mean that our children are destined to be treated with pharmaceutical drugs. Many opponents of ADHD diagnosis argue that diagnosis is not an indication that something is amiss with those diagnosed, but that something has gone amiss in our society. The choice and the cure are in our hands.
