As the 25th National Breast Cancer Awareness Month enter its final week, I’m reminded of how much has changed for the better in the fight against this disease, and humbled by how much is still left to do.
The good news first: breast cancer mortality is dipping slightly and some forms of breast cancer have extraordinary survival rates - 98% five-year survival rates for cancers that haven’t spread from the breast, compared with 74% when I founded Susan G. Komen for the Cure and launched the global breast cancer movement in 1982.

Ways to Prevent Lung Cancer : Diet Tips
October 1, 2009
One of the ways to prevent lung cancer is to eat nutritious foods. I’ve found this list of foods, chock-full of nutrients that will help you protect and prevent lung cancer, from Woman’s World Magazine, Sept. 21, 2009, p. 16.
Lung Cancer Facts: Men and Women
The latest research reveals that women are a lot more vulnerable to lung cancer than men are. Lung cancer is more common than breast, ovarian and uterine cancers combined. Research has found out also — even non-smoking women are twice as likely to develop it compared to their partners. According to Woman’s World magazine: Whether you smoke or not, these study proven strategies can slash your risk 60% or more!
Cut Your Lung-Cancer Risk in Half!
Getting vitamin E from whole foods instead of supplements gives you all 8 forms of vitamins E at once. Research at Wake Forest University suggests that these antioxidants are 40 times move effective when taken as a team than when taken solo — helping to cut your lung-cancer risk in half!
Food sources - For Best Results: Enjoy 1 oz. of sunflower seeds, almonds, peanut butter or wheat germ daily.
Great Lung-Protector Foods:
Consuming one cup of spinach daily also halves your odds of ever having lung cancer. Taking in lycopene — the pigment that makes tomatoes red — cuts the risk by up to 32%. Lycopene is best absorbed when eaten with a little fat: “That makes pizza topped with tomato sauce, chopped spinach and cheese a great lung protector!” says women’s health specialist Deborah Bernstein, M.D.
Reduce Lung-Cancer Risk with Apples
Eating an apple a day (skin and all!) can keep the doctor away. Inflammation-fighting nutrients in apples reduce lung-cancer risk by 60%, while boosting resistance to pneumonia and bronchitis.
According to the magazine — Red Delicious, Northern Spy and Cortland apples have the highest concentration of these nutrients.
Heal Damaged Lung Tissue with Oranges
Ann G. Kulze, M.D., author of Dr. Ann’s 10-Step Diet, says: The antioxidant carotenoids in citrus fruits heal damaged lung tissue before cancerous changes occur.
Harvard research suggests: eating just half a cup of oranges a day — or any other carotenoid-rich food, such as carrots, sweet potatoes or butternut squash — can send your lung-cancer risk plunging by 25%.
Prevent Pre-Cancerous Lung Cells - Juice
The natural chemicals called proanthocyanidins from cranberry juice help prevent the spread of precancerous lung cells. Drinking 8 oz. of cranberry juice — or a handful of the dried sweetened berries — daily delivers the same benefit.
Exercise - Lowers Risk of Lung Cancer
Another way to prevent lung cancer is exercise. Exercising in just 20 minutes a day of physical activity improves blood flow to the lungs and speeds healing of damaged tissues. Up to 45% lower risk of lung cancer, even for ex-smokers and current smokers.
